Yannis  François

Bass-baritone. Born in Guadeloupe, he began his career as a dancer; he is a graduate of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart in Lausanne and belonged to the Béjart Ballet. At the same time, he studied on the vocal department of the Lausanne Conservatoire with Gary Magby. His roles have included Mozart's Don Giovanni, as well as Curio in Giulio Cesare (in a production featuring Andreas Scholl), Peter Quince in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Seneca in L'incoronazione di Poppea and Plutone in Orfeo (both Monteverdi) and Melisso in Handel's Alcina. He has also sung Peter Maxwell's Eights Songs for a Mad King, bass parts in such works as Bach's B minor Mass and the St John Passions by Handel and Bach, Mozart's Requiem and Schumann's Paradise and the Peri. He has performed under the baton of such conductors as Jordi Savall, Jésus López Cobos, Ton Koopman, Václav Luks, Ottavio Dantone, Leonardo García Alarcón and Michael Hofstetter, at such venues as the Opéra Comique in Paris, the opera houses of Lausanne and Vichy, the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Chapelle Royale in Versailles and Schönbrunn Palace Theatre in Vienna, and also at the World Expo in Shanghai and the Beiteddine Art Festival in Lebanon, as well as on the ‘Projet Eternal' tour. Since 2012, he has been a member of Les Arts Florissants. This season, he has sung in such productions as Marin Marais's Alcyone (Paris, cond. Jordi Savall) and Campra's Idomeneo in Vienna. His great passion is collecting Baroque and early Classical manuscripts and scores.
