*17 II 1913 Moskwa, †14 I 1954 Moskwa

Emmanuel Grossman – 10th Prize winner, 2nd International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1932).

Extraordinarily talented Emanuel Grossman studied piano at the Moscow Conservatoire with Henry Neuhaus. He graduated in 1932. In March 1932 he took 11th Prize at the 2nd Chopin Competition. The following year he was 3rd at the All-Soviet Musical Performance Competition.

Grossman was more active as a teacher than performer, however. He started teaching in 1931 while still a graduate student. After graduating from the Conservatoire he continued his studies with Neuhaus while pursuing his teaching career. At the age of 22 he was nominated lecturer, a clear sign of acknowledgment of his exceptional didactic achievements.

Between 1943 and 1951, apart from his work at the Conservatoire, Grossman also held piano classes at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow. He died prematurely at the age of 41.
