Marceli Antoni Schulz

Marceli Antoni Schulz

*16 I 1818 Koziegłowy, †9 IV 1898 Poznań

Marceli Antoni Schulz was the author of the first monograph on Fryderyk Chopin. He spent most of his life in Poznań, where from 1844 he was a teacher of classical philology and French at the Mary Magdalene College. He was a friend of Oskar Kolberg, and an occasional music critic who published in the Tygodnik Literacki and Echo Muzyczne. He based his monograph on available Polish and foreign literature, but aimed at completing the biographical data - with little success, as he himself admitted - with references from people who had known Chopin personally. The book also includes chapters characterising Chopin as a teacher and improviser, and a short characteristic of his personality. In the last chapter, Schulz briefly discusses Chopin's melody, harmony and rhythm, and his works written after 1833.
