Gabriela Montero – 3rd Prize winner, 13th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1995). Gabriela Montero began taking piano lessons at the age of four from Lyl Tiempo in her hometown, Caracas. She played for the first time with orchestra at the age of eight (Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D major). In 1978, she moved to the United States, where she studied with Rosalina Sackstein and Edna Golansky. She completed her piano studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1990–93) with Hamish Milne and Andrzej Esterházy, graduating with honours and winning two special awards – the Christian Carpenter Award and the Anna Instone Memorial Award. She attended masterclasses held by András Schiff and Tamás Vásáry.

While in the US, Ms. Montero participated in over 20 competitions for young musicians, winning many of them, such as the AMSA Young Artist International Piano Competition in Cincinnati (1983) and the Baldwin Keyboard Competition (1984). At the age of 17, she entered the Palm Beach International Piano Competition in Florida, winning the Joseph Hofmann award (1987). She took 3rd Prize at the Chopin Competition in 1995.

After her Warsaw success, Ms. Montero developed her international career steadily, touring Japan and Taiwan (with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Kazimierz Kord) and giving a series of concerts throughout Europe. In 1996, she gave a recital at the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki. In 2001, Martha Argerich invited her to participate in the Music Festival in Buenos Aires. The following year they appeared together in Lugano, playing works for two pianos.
