Wilhelm Adolf (Adolphe) Gutmann - German pianist and composer, Chopin's student and friend.

In 1834 he came to Paris to study with Chopin. He quickly became his favourite and one of the best students. Gutmann performed in Paris and abroad, 3 III 1838 he played with Chopin, P.-J. Zimmerman and Alkan in Salle Pape (Paris), performing Allegretto and Finale from Beethoven's VII Symphony in A Major in Alkan's transcription for eight hands and two pianos.

Beside Fontana, Gutmann was the main copyist of Chopin's works. There are nine copies of Chopin's compositions took by Gutmann: six Etudes op. 25,  Sonata in B minor op. 35, Ballad in F Major op. 38 and Scherzo in C Minor op. 39. He delivered composer's letters to his family in Warsaw. Chopin visited the family of Gutmann in 1835, coming back from Vienna to Paris. Gutmann watched over Chopin during his desease and especially during his last days.

Gutmann's compositions show Chopin's influence. His popular work Dix Etudes caractéristiques de Concert op. 12 is dedicated to Chopin.
