Jakub Czekierda

Jakub Czekierda was born on 8 April 1991 in Bytom. He began his training in 1998 at age 7 at the Fryderyk Chopin Primary and Secondary Music Schools in Bytom, in the piano studio of Maria Wróbel-Zegalska. He is presently a second-year student at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, in the piano studio of Prof. Zbigniew Raubo. Since his earliest years, Czekierda has enjoyed taking part in national and international competitions, scoring successes. The most important of them are:

  • 2nd place at the Tadeusz Szeligowski National Piano Competition, Poznań 2003
  • 1st place at the Robert Schumann ‘Für Musik' International Piano Competition, Suwałki 2008
  • 2nd place and President of Czech Republic's special prize at 39th International Piano Competition ‘Virtuosi per musica di pianoforte', Czech Republic 2006
  • 4th place at the 1st Szymanowski Memorial National Piano Competition, Warsaw 2008
  • 3rd place at the Silesian Piano Competition, Zabrze 2009
  • 2nd place at the 7th Ignacy Jan Paderewski National Piano Competition, Piotrków Trybunalski 2009
  • 3rd place at the Chamber Music Competition, Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice 2011

He has won scholarships from the City of Piekary Śląskie (2 times), as well as the Polish Children's Fund (3 times).

Beyond this, he has appeared three times with the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist (2006, 2008, 2009) at concerts in the Young Virtuoso Stage series.

In 2012, the artist recorded a CD with chamber music by Karol Szymanowski, Henryk Wieniawski, Giuseppe Tartini and Niccolò Paganini, together with Portuguese violinist Nuno Soares at Radio Łódź. As part of the promotion of the CD and the Adi Art label, he performed at concerts in, among other places, Łęczyca, Łódź and the Zielona Góra Philharmonic, as well as abroad in Lisbon and Braga (Portugal 2012).

On 20 June 2013, he presented a recital at a Young Talents series concert in the Fryderyk Chopin Museum, comprised of works by Haydn, Chopin and Prokofiev. A recording made of this concert qualified him for continued support from The Fryderyk Chopin Institute.

On 30 September 2013, Czekierda performed in Vilnius, Lithuania, presenting a recital comprised of works by Fryderyk Chopin and Ludwig van Beethoven.

On 12 October, he took part in a concert at the Music Theater in Łódź as part of the Adi Jazz festival, presenting Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in a solo version, which was then placed on the festival CD.

On 26 and 28 February, the pianist presented Chopin recitals at the Bonarka in Kraków as part of celebrations of Chopin's birthday.

On 10 March 2014, together with vocalist Lucyna Jarząbek, he received an honorable mention at the Vocal-Piano Duo Competition in Wrocław.

On 19 March 2015, together with vocalist Lucyna Jarząbek, he won 2nd Prize (1st not awarded) at the National Vocal-Piano Duo Competition in Katowice.

On 18 April 2015, together with vocalist Lucyna Jarząbek, he won 3rd Prize at the 2nd National Chamber Music Championship in Bydgoszcz.

On 26 April 2015, Czekierda presented a half-recital comprised of works by George Gershwin at the Concert Hall of the Academy of Music in Katowice as part of a benefit concert entitled ‘Spring Prelude', organized by the Katowice-Barbórka Lions Club Foundation, and was selected to receive a scholarship in the amount of PLN 7000.

On 15 October 2015, he performed in Slovakia, giving a recital organized by the Silesia Institution for the Promotion and Popularization of Music, comprised of works by Grażyna Bacewicz, Fryderyk Chopin and Franz Joseph Haydn.

In December 2015, the pianist received 4th place (out of 40 people) in the Debut International Competition at Carnegie Hall in New York, having sent in a recording comprised of works by Haydn, Prokofiev and Szymanowski.

In May 2016, he received 3rd place (out of 50 applications from all over the world) at the Rising Stars Grand Prix International Music Competition in Berlin in the solo instrument category.

In August of this year, Jakub Czekierda will be recording a CD with vocalist Lucyna Rak, comprised of songs by Fryderyk Chopin, Karol Szymanowski, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms.
