Zofia Chechlińska was born on the 21st of October 1932 in Poznań. In 1950 she finished high school in Warsaw and in 1955 additionally secondary music school (piano class). Between 1951 and 1956 she studied musicology at the Warsaw University. In march 1959 she received her master’s degree preparing a thesis entitled: Źródła do scherzo Fryderyka Chopina (Sources to Chopin’s scherzi) written under the supervision of Prof. Józef Chomiński. Between 1959 and 1961 she was part of the team working on the Catalogue of the works of Chopin by Prof. J.M. Chomiński. In 1966 she completed her PhD dissertation entitled Faktura fortepianowa Chopina (The piano texture in Chopin’s works).

She worked as a lecturer in Toruń, then for over 20 years in Krakow at the Iagiellonian University. Since the 1st of January 1969 she has been working in the Polish Academy of Science. In 1996 she wrote her habilitation thesis Variations and variation technique in Chopin’s output.

Zofia Chechlińska is a member of the Polish Composers' Union (Section of Musicology) and the Polish Chopin Academy society.

On the 22nd of October 2012 the Chopin Institute together with the Polish Academy of Science organised a special meeting celebrating the 80th birthday of Prof. Chechlińska. The ceremony took place in the Chopin Museum. Janusz Olejniczak gave a short piano recital to pay tribute to prof. Chechlińska.
