Between 1939 and 1942 he worked as Serkin's assistant at Curtis Institute of Music. In 1942 he was enlisted to the American army and was sent to Japan. During his mission in Japan he conducted the premiere of Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. In 1968 he became professor of the piano at the Indiana University in Bloomington.

He received positive reviews and opinions in 1971 after his performance of the Liszt's Totentanz with the New York Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Boulez. His recital in Carnegie Hall in 1974 tunred out to be the turning point in his career.

In 1960 he took part in the recording of the soundtrack to the film about Liszt: Song without End. Bolet's first recordings were made for the Remington recording company. In 1976 he signed a contract with Decca recording company, for which he recorded the albums with the music of Chopin, Schumann and mainly Liszt. The artist stressed that he highly valued the contact with the audience, and that was the reason he did not enjoy recording in studios.
