Beniamin Vogel

A trained musicologist, researcher in music sociology, music history and instrumentology, in such areas as the history of Polish piano making and violin making, musical instrument production in and around Gdańsk in former times, and the history of instrument making in Sweden.

He was born in 1945 in Aksu (Kazakhstan). After gaining his secondary school certificate in Świdnica (1962), he completed the State Secondary School of Music in Wałbrzych (1968) and began studies at Warsaw University's Institute of Musicology (IMUW), where he went on to gain his MA (1973), PhD (1977, 'Instrumenty muzyczne w kulturze Królestwa Polskiego 1815-1914' [Musical instruments in the culture of the Kingdom of Poland 1815-1914], promoter A. Chodkowski) and habilitation (1988, 'Budownictwo fortepianów na ziemiach polskich od połowy XVIII w. do II wojny światowej' [Piano building in Polish lands from the mid 18th c. to World War II]). In the period 1978-94 he worked at the IMUW as a lecturer, and from 1981 to 1989 he led the IMUW Scholarly Research Station in Bydgoszcz. Since 1997 he has been a reader at the Institute of Musicology and Art History of Lund University (Sweden), and since 2003 a professor of Szczecin University.

He works with many museums in Poland and abroad as an expert in historical instruments, e.g. expert adviser to the Polish Ministry of Culture and the Arts (1978-94). He has also held the post of Custodian of the Piano Section of the Industrial History Museum in Opatówek, near Kalisz (1986-92), where he remains a member of the Academic Board.

The author of several books and many articles, he has received awards from the Vice-Chancellor of Warsaw University for his PhD thesis, the Minister of Education for his Habilitationsschrift, and the Minister of Culture and the Arts for achievements in research (team award, 1987) and for the protection of historical buildings and artefacts (team award, 1987), among others.

A member of the Polish Composers' Union (Musicology Section), the Polish Union of Artist Violin Makers, the American Musical Instrument Society and the Svenska samfundet för musikforskning, as well as the Programme Committee of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw.
