Józef Stompel was born on 4th July 1933 in Świętochłowice. He studied piano at the State High School of Music in Katowice in the class of Wanda Chmielowska, graduating with honours in 1959. He continued his studies in Salzburg with Bruno Seidlhofer. He received awards at the National Mozart Competition and the George Enescu International Competition in Bucharest. In 1960, he received a distinction at the 6th Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

Today, Józef Stompel is a distinguished performer and teacher. As an eminent pianist, he has received invitations to leading festivals, including Warsaw Autumn, Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój, Mariánské Lázně, Antonin and the Polish Piano Festival in Słupsk. He appeared twice at the Carnegie Hall, presenting works by Polish composers: Paderewski, Szymanowski and Chopin. He is dedicated to the rediscovery of forgotten Polish music, playing it on the concert stage, broadcasts and CDs. He has given first performances of works by Bolesław Szabelski, Józef Talarczyk, Jerzy Gablenz, Zygmunt Stojowski, Witold Friemann, and modern composers such as Romuald Twardowski, Krzysztof Baculewski, Edward Bogusławski, Jan Wincenty Hawel, Józef Świdr and others. Among his recordings are a CD with the solo works of Władysław Żeleński (for the Polskie Nagrania label), and a Chopin and Gershwin recording for Classicord.

Józef Stompel's teaching activity centres around young pianists. He seeks early talents visiting music schools, and as a juror of piano competitions. The most gifted children are invited to his piano class, and later receive awards at international competition. He also holds a piano class at the Music Academy in Katowice, and has held masterclasses in Belgium, the US, Uruguay, Japan, Korea and Canada. He has sat in the juries of the 14th and 15th Chopin Competition. He twice received the Minister of Culture Award, and the National Education Medal. He is Honorary Citizen of his home city, Świętochłowice. He was invited to the Programme Board of the NIFC on 4th December 2005.
