On the Anniversary of the Death of Fryderyk Chopin

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Requiem

On the 157th anniversary of the death of the composer, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute organized two exceptional concerts. Their programme alludes to the composer's ceremonial funeral, held at the church of La Madeleine in Paris, which, at his request, included a performance of Mozart's Requiem.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem in D minor, K. 626, was performed twice (17 & 18 October) - the first time it has been performed in Poland on historical instruments. As is generally known, Mozart was unable to complete his Requiem due to his untimely death. The completion by his pupil Süssmayr has been criticized by many, including Brahms and Richard Strauss, and recent new completions have also proved unsatisfactory. The arranger and music theorist Clemens Kemme, who recently completed a successful reconstruction of the Mass in C minor, K. 427, has produced an entirely new version of Süssmayr's work. In a serious attempt to get considerably closer to Mozart's characteristic style, he re-examined all the available sources. He has re-orchestrated those movements for which Mozart composed only the vocal parts and the orchestral bass (Sequentia, Offertorium) and improved the composition and orchestration of the movements which Süssmayr composed on motives most likely given to him by Mozart (Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei). In addition, he has tried to match the orchestral colours to the content of the text, as Mozart achieved so masterfully in so many other works.

On 17 October at 7.45 p.m. in the Holy Cross Church at 3 ul. Krakowskie Przedmieście, the liturgical version of the work was performed; on 18 October at 8 p.m. in the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio, the concert version was heard.
